PROGRESSION

I started by sketching every part of the pinecone I could. Know your element.


Then I did the same with cardboard. Know your medium. Then I looked at both sketches together and tried to find how the two forms could overlap, what were the similarities in the forms?


Started with the stem and main structure.


We were told to make it as much like our item as possible, so I took that and went with it. This is the bottom, which no one will see unless the lift the pinecone. But I know.


Starting the branches, the base took about 6-8 hours.

Cut a foot off! YAY progress!

To flap your arms and fly

After having mug shots taken, acquiring a super shnazy high-tech name tag that flashed and spun and looked like masking tape (and truthfully was only one of those things) we took our seats at the studio tables where our journey would begin. We were told that as an artist it is our job to make dreams reality. We were presented with a problem and tools for a solution. Our imaginations were all that stood in the way and all that could unblock the way.

Our problem? A cinderblock that wanted to be taller. Our tools? A pile of newspaper and elmer's glue.

1) I started off trying to make a cardboard look-alike. I folded a newspaper back and forth like a fan.
2) I was going to put a layer on top of it and then another corrugated layer and so on.
3) It didn't turn out to have good posture. So I ditched that idea.
4) Not in furry, but continuing with the structure of my first idea I crumpled paper up.
5) and then wrapped it up so it wouldn't fly everywhere.
6) I made a base with three across
7) I was going to continue in that pattern alternating the grain of the newspaper burritos.
8) then it got closer to time being up and my competitiveness filled the space time had been so I took out one burrito from each level like in jenga so it would be almost two times as tall.
9) when the destroyer cinderblock came to my creation, it had a bit of a lean.
10) but it worked out! And I say it was a success because my imagination definitely had a good jog.
